On day one, I was filled with optimistic enthusiasm.
Then the reality of life set in. I go from 5am to 9pm at full steam pretty much every day. Where exactly was I going to squeeze in uninterrupted writing time? Somewhere inside, I think I knew that was going to be a problem.
Thus, my word count has stayed exactly where it was on November 1: 187. Watching the #nanowrimo tweets are almost depressing at this point. Lots of folks are well into the tens of thousands.
There’s a part of me that wants to feel disappointed in myself for not keeping the pace. But there’s another side that realizes this project simply isn’t a priority – and that’s okay. In fact, it’s probably more than okay. I’d be wrestling with a lot more than disappointment if I had neglected other projects to make this a priority.
So, where do I go from here?
The truth is: I don’t know. There’s still 20 days of month left, and some big projects wrap up this Friday. An hour a day might be feasible going forward.
For a few days, I think I’m going to ignore any type of goal and just keep working on the Book Proposal. Of all the ways to focus on writing, that seems to be the most productive.
What do you do when you experience a major setback that calls your goal into question? I’d love to hear about your approach.
